Traipsing & day hiking | Sedona, AZ
The Landship Galactica just recently successfully hosted me for a full 14 days off grid. During this time I carried out exploration and discovery missions in the Arizona Desert. The mission was a complete success, however it depleted nearly all of our onboard provisions and fresh water supply. In need of a resupply run, I adjusted LG's nav system to the north towards Sedona, AZ. As we departed from our temporary basecamp, the friendly neighborhood saguaros seemed to wave goodbye.
Bell Rock
The Good: Truly enjoyable day hiking w/ fantastic photo opportunities abound. Extremely close to town with lots of parking options. (Still get there early to be less hassled). Tons of options and areas to explore. The day I visited there was a mysterious flute playing at the base of the gigantic picturesque rocks making this day hike even more inspirational.
The Bad: Can get extremely crowded, the parking situation at all these nearby trailheads becomes a zoo by 10-11am on the weekends. Arrive early to save yourself frustration.
Cathedral Rock
The Good: Really good day hiking w/ fantastic photo opportunities abound. Plenty of trail options and areas to explore to get away from the crowds.
The Bad: Can be extremely crowded, in fact the day I visited this area the trailhead was closed to personal traffic and you were required to ride a 10min shuttle in and out. This is not too surprising given the extreme popularity, easy of access and beauty of this whole area. I'd recommend arriving early and try to visit during the middle of the week if possible to avoid the crowd.
There are many many trails right on the edge of these small towns. You really don't have to venture far from your accommodations to be immersed in the breathtaking and world class sights here. Galactica and crew barely scratched the surface with our discovery missions. Its always been part of our principles to leave meat on the bone rather than leave no stone unturned I encourage you to take your time and leave yourself something to come back for.
Camping / Boondocking
There have been recent changes to the dispersed camping in this area. It's now designated dispersed spots and you have to make sure you're in one of those designated areas in order to camp legally in the Sedona area. See the map linked below, or look for the most recent updated regulations here.
